Professor Wang Gungwu recognised in Queen’s Birthday Honours

The ASAA is pleased to congratulate Professor Wang Gungwu who has been recognised as an Officer (AO) in the General Division of the Order of Australia as part of the 2018 Queen’s Birthday Honours.

The citation notes this honour was awarded “For distinguished service to tertiary education as an academic and researcher, particularly to far eastern history and the study of the Chinese diaspora, and to the enhancement of Australia-Asia relations.”

Professor Wang Gungwu has made immense contributions to Asian studies, particularly with regard to overseas Chinese. He has worked as a Professor of Far Eastern History at the Australian National University, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong, and was bestowed the prestigious University Professor title by the National University of Singapore. He was a founding member of the ASAA in 1976, served as its President from 1978 to 1980, and was awarded Honorary Life membership in 2014. The ASAA’s Wang Gungwu Prize for the best article published in Asian Studies Review was renamed in his honour in 2013.
