The Australian National University will host a special 10-day adult learning course, Reading Dutch for Historical Research, in January 2024. The course will be taught by Professor Robert Cribb of the Australian National University, a well-known historian of Indonesia.

Dutch is one of the most important European languages for undertaking research on Asian history and is especially important for the study of Indonesian society, culture and environment. This course focuses on the basic skills needed to read printed 19th and 20th century Dutch materials. Participants will learn basic pronunciation rules but there will be no attempt to teach conversational Dutch or how to write Dutch prose.
There is no enrolment fee for participants to attend, and there is no facility for it to be used as credit for any study program. Places are limited, and participants will be required to obtain a copy (at their own expense) of Dutch for Reading Knowledge as a textbook to undertake this short course.
