Call for Expressions of Interest: Series Editor(s), ASAA South Asia Book Series (Routledge)

The Asian Studies Association of Australia (ASAA) invites expressions of interest for the role of Series Editor (or Co-Editors) of its South Asia Series, published by Routledge.

Founded in 1986 to showcase outstanding work in the social sciences and humanities, the South Asia Series has been published with Routledge since 2010, continuing a distinguished tradition of Australian-based research on South Asia. Volumes in the series encompass research on the countries and peoples of South Asia across history, politics, anthropology, geography, literature, sociology, cultural studies, communication studies, and gender studies. Interdisciplinary and comparative work is particularly encouraged.

The ASAA is now seeking an open expression of interest from editor(s) to lead the next phase of the series. Given the breadth of the scholarship in the field of South Asian studies and the need for the book series to cater to the diversity of expertise within the field, we are especially keen to receive joint applications from a team of two co-editors, with one applicant based primarily in the social sciences and the other in the humanities. However, both individual and paired EOIs are welcome.

Who should apply?

We encourage EOIs from scholars who:

  • have a strong research profile in South Asian studies in either the social sciences or the humanities (or both);
  • are familiar with current debates and emerging agendas in South Asian scholarship;
  • have experience with editing and publishing academic books and/or book series (as author, editor, or series board member);
  • have excellent communication and team-working skills; and
  • are committed to supporting authors, working closely with the publishers, and strengthening high-quality, internationally visible scholarship on South Asia.

Application format

All expressions of interest should be submitted by Sunday, 15 February 2026 and must include:

  1. Cover letter (maximum one page)
    • outlining relevant academic, editorial, and disciplinary experience;
    • explaining your vision for the South Asia Series and why you are the best person/team for the role.
  2. Curriculum vitae (maximum five pages per person)

Additional requirements:

  • Individual applications
    • Please state clearly whether your primary expertise lies in the humanities or the social sciences; and
    • Indicate explicitly in the cover letter whether you are open to being paired with another editor as part of a co-editing team.
  • Paired applications
    • Submit a single joint cover letter (maximum one page) explaining your team’s complementary strengths (ideally one primarily in social sciences, one in humanities) and your shared vision for the series.
