ASAA Event Grant

ASAA Event Grant

The ASAA Event Grant funds workshops, symposia, or conferences that will be of interest and value to other ASAA members and the broader scholarly community. Click here for a list of previous recipients of the Event Grant.

Applications for the 2025 round of the ASAA Event Grant are now open and will close on 13 December 2024. The winners of this grant will be posted on this page in either late 2024 or early 2025. The committee will not enter into correspondence from applicants regarding the announcement deadline. Individual feedback is not provided to unsuccessful applicants.

It is a condition of receipt of the grant that the winner is willing to serve on the committee for this grant in a future round. Previous recipients are welcome to re-apply, but preference may be given to first-time applicants if there are a significant number of high-quality applications.

Overview of the Scheme

Applications will be open to ASAA members who wish to organise a workshop, symposium or conference that will be of interest and value to other ASAA members and the broader scholarly community. In considering the applications, the selection committee will assess whether the proposed event:

  • Facilitates research-oriented networking, especially among scholars have not previously benefited from the Event Grant program;
  • Builds the skills of early career researchers;
  • Builds skills of postgraduate students;
  • Promotes the study of Asia;
  • Supports expertise in research on Asia;
  • Promotes the visibility of Asian Studies to new audiences;
  • Demonstrates value for money; and
  • Identifies clear research outcomes that demonstrate the value of the event to the target community.

Advice on successfully applying for the ASAA Event Grant can be found here

Allowable expenses include expenses directly associated with running an event (e.g. event logistical/IT support, hosting fees), honorariums to speakers, event promotion, and expenses that support publication outcomes from the event.

The ASAA Event Grant will not fund research projects. The ASAA reserves the right to fund successful applications to a total less than the amount requested by the applicant(s).

Where registration fees are charged for participation in a funded event, there should be a reduced fee for ASAA members, and fee structures should provide an incentive to participating non-members to join the ASAA.

All funded events should acknowledge the support of the ASAA in all their publicity and reporting materials. The event grant applicant/application team should provide a report, consisting of not more than a single A4 page, to the ASAA within one month of completing the funded event. Funding must be spent prior to 31 December 2025 otherwise it must be returned to ASAA.

Grants will only be advanced to, and must be acquitted by, a university research office. This scheme qualifies as Category 3 external research funding.

Applicants may wish to consider the ASAA journal, Asian Studies Review, as a possible outlet for publications generated from their funded events, and are advised to consult the Editors about how any proposed collections would fit with the journal’s existing commitments.
