Donations and Bequests
Donations and Bequests
The ASAA has been fortunate to be the recipient of donations and bequests over the years. The generosity of members goes a long way to supporting the work of ASAA and its members.
ASAA is registered as a charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC), however we do not currently have Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status.
Donations
Please contact the President and the Treasurer if you are interested in giving a donation. The ASAA is grateful to receive donations either for the general work of the Association, or for a specific purpose that aligns with our mission and focus on promoting and supporting Asian studies in Australia.
Bequests
Please contact the President and the Treasurer if you are interested in leaving a bequest in your will. Acknowledgement of Past Donations and Bequests
The ASAA has received both public and anonymous donations in the past. We gratefully acknowledge the following donations and bequests.
In 2024, the ASAA received a generous bequest from the late Elaine McKay. Elaine McKay was the first woman to be elected president of the ASAA and the only person to have held the ASAA presidency for two consecutive terms between 1987 and 1990. Read more about the life and contributions of Elaine McKay here.
In 2022, the ASAA received a generous donation to establish the Reid Prize, which is awarded biennially to the book that has best advanced the understanding of Asia in the last four years. Professor Tony Reid was part of the creation of the ASAA in 1975-6 and was president of the ASAA in 1996-8, while Dr Helen Reid had a distinguished career in language policy and administration, including as language coordinator for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra (1995-9).
In addition to the endowment that supports the Reid Prize, Tony and Helen have made three other donations to the ASAA over the years, in 2002, 2013, and 2014. These donations have allowed the Association to fund crucial programs, such as our book prizes and postgraduate bursaries, and the ASAA gratefully acknowledges the Reid family’s generosity. You can learn more about Tony and Helen Reid here.
