Call for Expressions of Interest: Editor/s of Asian Studies Review

The Asian Studies Association of Australia (ASAA) is seeking expressions of interest (EOIs) from individuals or teams of scholars who can edit its flagship journal, Asian Studies Review (ASR), for a single four-year term starting in January 2027.

The current Editor-in-Chief, Associate Professor Dirk Tomsa, will conclude his term in December 2026, and is committed to ensuring a smooth handover in duties from one editorial team to the next.

As a highly ranked international journal of interdisciplinary Asian Studies, ASR publishes research and book reviews on the modern histories, cultures, societies, languages, politics and religions of Asia, with a regional focus on East, Southeast and South Asia.

Hitherto the journal has mostly operated under the leadership of a single Editor-in-Chief, but in light of growing submission rates and a rapidly changing publishing landscape the ASAA is open to innovative approaches to managing the journal into the future, including collective or team-based models.

The main consideration for the ASAA in assessing EOIs will be the combination of disciplinary skills and regional expertise that applicants would bring to the role. A certain degree of experience in editorial work for an academic journal, including ASR, will be considered favourably by the Association. Familiarity with the Scholar One platform, which is used by ASR and many other journals, would be a bonus, as would a demonstrated capacity to work well with the current Editorial Board, either in an editorial capacity or as an author or reviewer.

Another consideration is that the new team of editors, whichever form it takes, should reflect the field of Asian Studies in its totality and diversity. EOIs from teams of scholars who reflect diversity of experience, career stage, gender, and ethnicity are highly welcome.

The closing date for EOIs is 31 July 2026 and all EOIs should be sent to the current Editor-in-Chief (asr@latrobe.edu.au).

Prospective applicants are encouraged to discuss their ideas for an EOI with the current Editor-in-Chief and/or other members of the ASAA Executive Committee (https://asaa.asn.au/about/council/), all of whom will be attending the association’s Biennial Conference in Geelong from 29 June to 2 July.
