| The Faculty of Social Sciences of Srinakharinwirot University, Bangkok, the Foundation for Promotion of Social Sciences and Humanities Textbooks Project, Thailand, and the Geographical Association of Thailand are pleased to announce the International Conference "Asian Identities: Trends in a Globalized World" on February 9th-11nd, 2011 at Imperial Queen's Park Hotel in Bangkok. The conference committee invites academics and professionals to exchange ideas and to contribute to the scholarship on the changes and transformations of various aspects of identities in contemporary Asia, e.g., gender; religion; migration and diaspora; language and food; the built environment; politics; local, national, and regional identities, etc. At present, Asia is not only faced with globalization, but also with the process of trans-nationalization as exemplified by attempts of ASEAN and Asian policy leaders to deepen regional integration. Identities in Asia are changing at an unprecedented speed. Globalization powerfully manifests itself in all aspects of social and cultural life. In ‘The Information Age’, Manuel Castells has pointed out that globalization has provoked considerable cultural, political, and economic resistance at the local level. Similarly, tensions between globalization and localization in Asia are often highlighted. Such understandings and interpretations have helped to promote the creation of modern Asian identities. More recently, trans-nationalization has challenged Asian identities as the example of ASEAN’s economic integration plan shows. The interplay between these two processes on changes of identities in Asia needs further study. TOPIC The conference welcomes submissions of both theoretical and empirical papers of the following themes: Art, Literature, Language and Architecture Food Diaspora and Migration Digital Society Entrepreneurship Environment Conservation and Agriculture Ethnicity Gender Geography and Geoinformatics Globalization and Trans-nationalization Heritage and Heritage Management Local, National, and Regional Identities Marginalized People Memory and Amnesia The Mass Media and Identity Music, Dance, and Film Peace, Violence and Conflict Resolution Political Movements Regionalism and Integration Religious Identities Representation and Signifying Practices The Self and the Other Self-Identity and Consumption Tourism and Identity Urban Planning and Identity | |||
