Description:
Research Fellowships

City University of Hong Kong is a dynamic, fast developing university distinguished by scholarship in research and professional education. As a publicly funded institution, the University is committed to nurturing and developing students’ talent and creating applicable knowledge to support social and economic advancement. Currently, the University has six Colleges/Schools. Within the next five years, the University aims to recruit 200 more scholars in various disciplines from all over the world, including science, engineering, business, social sciences, humanities, law, creative media, energy, environment, and biomedical & veterinary sciences.

Applications are invited for:
(1) Research Fellow [Ref. C/R/746/09]
(2) Research Fellow [Ref. C/R/747/09]
(3) Research Fellows (2 posts) [Ref. C/R/748/09]
in the Department of Asian and International Studies (Appointment for 24 months)

For post (1), applicants must have knowledge of at least one of the following countries: Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and/or the Philippines. Language competency in one of these countries and an understanding of the agricultural sectors or of the development issues in these countries are desirable. Most of the employee’s time will be allocated to a multi-national research project headed by Dr. Kyaw Yin Hlaing (email : yh.kyaw@cityu.edu.hk) as well as advancing their own research.

For post (2), applicants must have a background in the political science or sociology of Southeast Asia. A competency in a Southeast Asian language (Thai, Tagalog or Bahasa) and an understanding of legislatures in Southeast Asian countries are desirable. Most of the employee’s time will be allocated to a multi-national research project headed by Professor William Case (email : w.case@cityu.edu.hk) as well as advancing their own research.

For post (3), appointments will be under a departmental research cluster (Development and Social Change, Asian Political Economy and Security, Comparative Politics of East Asia or Environmental Politics and Society). Prior to submission, applicants should identify a faculty member with whom they wish to work (website: http://www6.cityu.edu.hk/ais/App/People/index.aspx) as well as a research topic to be jointly pursued. Most of the employee’s time will be allocated to this joint project as well as advancing their own research.

For all posts, a maximum of 3 hours for teaching per week required. Supervision of final year projects and/or Master’s-level theses (maximum of 3 hours per week) may also be required.

Requirements :

A PhD degree or attainment of the qualification upon appointment. [Applicants shall discuss with the respective Principal Investigator of the research project on their applications.]
